Opened in fall 2013, Battle High School was named in honor of Dr. Muriel Battle, an educator who served Columbia Public Schools for 40 years. Battle was a pioneer in the desegregation of both the school district and the community at large. Starting as a social studies teacher at Douglass High School, Battle spent the bulk of her time with CPS at West Junior High School, where she worked as a teacher, department chairperson, assistant principal and principal. The motto at West Junior High while Battle was at the helm was, “We’re glad you’re here.” She retired as the first female associate superintendent of Columbia Public Schools.
The Battle Spartans have achieved success in the short time they have been competing, with a state championship in football in 2014.
